About this work
A skeleton with skull turned toward the viewer rides a rearing horse at the top of the sheet, gripping a long staff overhead. Below, the composition spirals into a tangle of horses shown upside down, legs splayed in the air, with a small mounted figure to the right and a fallen nude figure gripping a sword near the bottom. The inverted, overlapping forms suggest bodies collapsing through space.
As in its companion print, fine cross-hatched lines and stippled dots build pale figures against a rough, heavily worked black ground. The engraving is dense and meticulous, carefully modeling bone, muscle, and horseflesh. The disordered, inverted arrangement and skeletal protagonist give the print a violent, nightmarish charge.
