About this work
At center, seen from behind, a long-haired kneeling man ringed in radiant light bends over a bull's severed head, his hands pressed against its horns and muzzle. To the left three anguished men cover their faces or crouch low in dismay, while at right a nude woman recoils with one arm raised and a frightened boy presses against her, all set within a dense, dark grove.
Radiating incised lines burst around the central figure like a halo, pulling the eye through the etching's heavy crosshatched gloom. Contorted faces and raised hands are rendered in sharp, nervous strokes, and the contrast between the lit center and the black grove gives the scene an intense, unsettled charge.
