About this work
Two men stand confronting each other beside a wooden stair railing. The man at left, seen mostly from behind, holds his hands clasped behind his back in a submissive stance, while the man at right, wearing a flat cap and jacket, leans in smoking a cigarette as he studies him.
Dense, energetic etched lines build volume and deep shadow across the two figures, set against bare white paper left untouched around them; the rough crosshatching and stark contrast of black ink give the print a tense, interrogative atmosphere.
