About this work
A huge, hunched giant with an open, roaring mouth crouches over a body sprawled at his feet, gripping the trunk of a gnarled tree. Below and around him several small nude men brace together to thrust a long pole toward his head, while another figure scrambles up into the branches above and a lone man watches from rocks in the distance.
Heavy, close cross-hatching gives the giant's back and shoulders an almost sculptural mass that dwarfs the wiry, more loosely hatched figures below, emphasizing the imbalance of scale and force. The straining diagonals of the attacking men and the giant's contorted head create a dense, violent momentum across the print.
