About this work
A horned, winged deity with an animal head sits enthroned inside a red arch at the top, flanked by columns of invented, hieroglyph-like script; below, a jackal-headed guardian with a spear stands at left while two winged, animal-headed spirits wield a whip and a blade over small captive figures; along the bottom edge, a mass of nude bodies twists and tumbles through orange and red flames.
The print is built from bold black contour lines and dense cross-hatching filled with flat washes of red, ochre, green and black, giving it a raw, woodcut-like graphic punch; the composition stacks judge, tormentors and the punished into three rising bands, and the fiery palette and writhing figures create an unsettled, infernal mood.
