About this work
A wide horizontal frieze, divided into several joined panels, is packed with overlapping groups of muscular men locked in combat: swinging clubs and staves, wrestling, and striking one another in tangled knots of limbs that run from one end of the canvas to the other, with no landscape or setting beyond the mass of bodies.
Rendered almost entirely in greys, browns, and ivory tones, with fine graphite hatching over an acrylic ground, the drawing-like precision and restrained monochrome palette recall old battle engravings. Dense cross-hatched shading models the straining muscles, and the overall effect is raw, chaotic, and intensely violent.
