About this work
A man's head and shoulders emerge from broad swathes of black ink, the wide brim of a hat sweeping to one side while a bearded, weathered face looks down and to the left. Only a few white paper gaps mark the eyes, nose ridge and cheekbones, everything else dissolved into shadow.
The medium is straight black ink applied with a loaded, dry brush, dragged and spattered across cream paper so that gesture itself becomes the drawing. Contrasts are extreme, with no half-tones, and the loose, calligraphic marks give the figure a rough, urgent presence.
