About this work
A young man's head and shoulders fill the sheet, his hair swept up and slightly disheveled, brows drawn together in a direct, searching gaze toward the viewer. The bust is cropped at the open collar of a loose shirt, built up through soft shading rather than outline.
Graphite is worked in smooth tonal gradations across the face, with looser cross-hatched strokes describing the hair, while the toned paper itself provides the mid-value ground. Dark blotches and foxing at the top edge of the sheet add an aged, weathered quality to an otherwise controlled, academic study.
