About this work
A large nude female figure with a broad grinning face sits astride a yellow-and-black spotted, fanged beast at the center of the sheet. Around her, pairs of nude men and women in maroon, olive and flesh tones wrestle, crawl on all fours, or lie sprawled across the composition, while a green demon-like figure raises a whip beside the beast's head.
Loose etched contour lines are overlaid with pale washes of ochre, rose and olive on cream paper, numbered and signed in pencil at the margins. The exaggerated, grotesque anatomy and crowded, writhing composition give the print a raw, disturbing energy suited to its apocalyptic subject of a woman enthroned on a beast.
