About this work
A crowded carnival scene unfolds at night, with a drummer beating a tasselled drum at the centre while masked and costumed figures cluster around in harlequin patterns and feathered headdresses. Behind them tower several tall, pale robed shapes like ghostly stilt-walkers, and at right a line of beaked, bird-masked revellers watches the gathering.
The composition is built from deep blues, greys and dusty white, warmed by touches of orange, yellow and rose in the costumes. Oil and pastel are worked with dense, scratchy strokes, giving every mask and drape a rough, agitated texture. Crowded, dim and slightly menacing, the scene reads as revelry shading into something stranger.
