About this work
A nude young woman stands at the left, gently smiling, her arm reaching across to touch the shoulder of a bearded man beside her whose entire head is engulfed in a tangled mass of scratchy hair; a small grimacing face seems to emerge from the ink pooling near his hip, and both figures' bare feet ground the composition on an otherwise empty sheet.
Worked in Indian ink, fine pen contours alternate with broad brushed washes and flicked droplets, leaving the paper's white ground for the woman's smooth body against the man's dense black hatching. The contrast of clean line and turbulent scribble gives the sketch a raw, unsettled energy typical of a quick, emotionally charged figure study.
