About this work
The sketch isolates a single bowed head and shoulders, the face turned down and half-hidden beneath a broad, crushed cap. Heavy black strokes carve out brow, nose and jaw while the eyes remain lost in shadow, giving the figure a withdrawn, brooding air.
Ink is laid on wet and heavy, pooling into solid blacks that bleed and drip down the paper in thin trailing rivulets. The economy of the brushwork and the stark contrast against bare paper produce a raw, immediate, almost unfinished intensity.
