About this work
A bearded man's face is drawn frontally, divided down the middle: the left side rendered in fine, pale cross-hatched lines against white paper, the right side saturated with a dense violet-pink wash beneath dark ink beard strokes. The eyes are large and dark, fixed in a steady, direct stare, and ink splatters gather at the lower left.
The strong tonal split between airy line work and saturated color gives the drawing a graphic, almost mask-like quality. Loose calligraphic strokes describe the beard and hair, while spatters and drips add a raw, unfinished energy. The overall effect is brooding and intensely watchful.
