About this work
A nude figure is shown crouched and turned inward, head bowed onto a raised arm while the legs fold beneath the body. A single dark contour, broken into jagged, thorn-like strokes, traces the torso, shoulders and knees, with a breast and hip picked out among the tangled lines. At the lower left a pool of ink blooms outward, spattered with dots of crimson and violet.
The drawing is built from scratchy, nervous black ink lines over a pale ground, punctuated by dry spatter and a diluted blue-violet wash around the head and hip. Loose, expressionist handling and the raw bleed of pigment give the figure a tense, inward-turned mood.
