About this work
A crowd of nude men and women twist and stagger amid tongues of flame that rise across the whole width of the sheet, arms flung up, heads thrown back or buried in hands; two small children crawl on the scorched ground in the foreground while a large orange sun burns in the upper left corner.
Etched outlines are washed with ochre, olive-green, rust and brown tones that model each body separately, while red and yellow strokes render the flames engulfing them. The crowded, restless arrangement of bodies and the heat-charged palette convey collective torment and exhaustion.
