About this work
A woman is shown from the waist up, nude to the waist, her long dark hair falling loosely past her shoulders and partly across her face. She turns her head slightly and fixes the viewer with a steady, unguarded stare, one shoulder in shadow, the other caught by a warm raking light.
Warm flesh tones of ochre and rose are built up in loose, visible strokes against a scraped, streaky background of grey-white and rust-red. The rough, unfinished-looking texture and strong light-dark contrast give the figure a raw, intense immediacy.
