About this work
A man's head and shoulders are shown in strict left profile, chin lifted, positioned almost centrally against a dark, undefined background. Only the face, brow and jaw catch light; the hair and collar dissolve into shadow, with a stroke of deep blue and gold marking the crown of the head.
The palette is limited to warm flesh ochres and pinks set against cool blackish greens and blues, applied with thick, visible, almost sculptural brushstrokes that leave ridges of paint on the surface. The stark light-dark contrast and raw, unfinished-looking edges give the study an immediate, intense feel.
