About this work
A single bent form dominates the canvas, back curving in a strong arc from left to right; the head is lowered and turned in profile at the right edge, where dark blue-black hair or drapery falls downward. The pale rose-grey body carries vertical streaks of red down the flank, set against a plain pink-grey ground with a strip of blue at upper left.
Painted in a restricted range of dusty rose, pale grey, deep blue-black and streaks of red, the surface is built up in thick ridges with visible knife and brush marks. The contracted, arched posture and raw red marks against pale flesh create a tense, anguished feeling that matches the title.
