About this work
A nude figure is seen from a low angle, bent forward on hands and knees with her head lowered close to the ground, arms braced beneath her shoulders. Her body fills the upper right of the canvas in warm cream and ochre tones, while the surrounding space dissolves into dark, streaked teal and brown shadow.
Thick, chalky impasto builds up the pale flesh of the back and shoulders in bright, almost sculptural highlights, set against loose, wet-on-wet strokes of teal, rust, and violet below. The stark contrast between the luminous figure and the murky ground gives the pose a raw, intimate intensity, as though caught in a private, unguarded moment.
