About this work
Across two joined canvases, a crew of muscular rowers is compressed into tight, overlapping diagonals: bare-chested men pull on oars and paddles, torsos twisted and arms braced, their boat reduced to angular red and yellow planes cutting through a dark teal ground. The bodies overlap and crowd the frame so the men seem to spill beyond its edges.
Painted in high-contrast blocks of teal, crimson, ochre and mustard yellow with visible, energetic brushwork, the figures are modeled in warm greyish flesh tones set against flat, non-naturalistic color fields. The steep diagonals, compressed space and saturated palette build a charged, muscular sense of collective effort and strain.
