About this work
A head fills the frame edge to edge, tilted so that only fragments of an eye, brow, and mouth emerge from a mass of built-up paint. Dark scribbled marks around the crown suggest disheveled hair, while streaks of red mark the lower edge like blood or a collar.
The image is constructed almost entirely from thick impasto ridges of white, grey, ochre, and violet, applied with a loaded brush or palette knife in slashing, circular motions. Representation nearly dissolves into raw paint texture, producing an intense, unsettling immediacy rather than a calm likeness.
