About this work
A heavy, swirling mass of grey and white clouds fills nearly three-quarters of the canvas, dominating a small hill crowned with a compact cluster of green trees. The hill slopes down on both sides to a dark band of river water in the foreground, with a low shoreline and a few distant structures faintly visible at the far right.
The sky is built from broad, curving strokes of grey, white and pale blue that suggest fast-moving, wind-driven cloud, while the trees and grass below are rendered in denser, more solid greens. The water sits dark and comparatively still, a quiet counterpoint to the agitated sky above it. The dynamic, sweeping brushwork and dramatic scale of the clouds give the whole scene a restless, weather-charged energy.
