About this work
A row of tall whitewashed houses with tiled roofs and hung laundry lines a curving shoreline, backed by dark cliffs and cypress trees. The sea spreads calm and turquoise at right under a heavy, dark sky.
Loose, confident strokes build the houses from creams, ochres and soft pinks, catching bright sunlight against a brooding indigo-black sky. The turquoise water is laid in smooth, glassy passages contrasting with the drier, textured paint of sand and buildings. Warm light on the rinsed walls against the darkened sky gives the scene a fresh calm after a storm.
