About this work
A weathered stone-and-timber shed occupies the center of the composition, its dark interior hung with a bundle of dried red peppers and flanked by a corrugated roof, a small window, and stacked wooden barrels and buckets. Patches of pale white material bank up against the walls and spread across the ground, thinning out toward muddy, bare earth in the foreground.
Strong raking light cuts diagonally across the scene, turning the snowy banks and sunlit stonework brilliant white against deep brown and olive shadow. The paint is applied in broad, loaded strokes with a limited earth palette of ochre, umber and grey, giving the humble yard corner a stark, high-contrast, almost architectural presence.
