About this work
A massive whitewashed belfry wall, pierced by a row of tall narrow arched openings, rises steeply above a green hillside. A smaller white building with a red roof stands at a distance to the left among trees, and a single figure walks along a dirt path across the grass in the foreground.
The tower is painted in thick, chalky strokes of white and cream, streaked with grey and ochre shadow to suggest weathered plaster. Behind it, the sky is worked in swirling strokes of violet and grey-blue, giving the scene a heavy, dramatic weight that dwarfs the small walking figure below.
