About this work

A hill town with a prominent bell tower sits atop a steep rock outcrop, its buildings and archway glowing warmly against a dark blue-black sky. A pale, curving road climbs from the shadowed valley up to the town's edge, cutting through gray-brown slopes that fall away steeply into shadow.

Deep indigo and near-black tones fill the sky and shadowed cliff face, applied in broad, dark strokes, while the town itself is built up with hot, thick impasto in gold, amber and cream. The glowing cluster of buildings reads almost like a lantern against the night, its light concentrated and dramatic. Sharp contrast between the lit town and surrounding darkness gives the scene a hushed, nocturnal drama.
