About this work
A solitary mountain peak dominates the composition, its steep slopes in deep blue-violet shadow with a warm streak of light on one flank. Layers of grey and white cloud press down from above, thinning toward paler sky at upper right, while a darker range of hills recedes to the left. Dense green forest runs along the mountain's base in the foreground.
The sky is built in soft, blended strokes of grey, lavender and white, while the mountain is painted with firmer, textured strokes of blue and violet. A thin seam of ochre light breaks across the rock, suggesting a last patch of sun before the weather closes in. The handling is loose and atmospheric, giving the scene a hushed heaviness.
