About this work
A wide river winds from the foreground toward the horizon, its curving banks bordered by low grassy meadows and a dark line of distant trees. Two shrubs stand at the lower left, and small sandy or muddy patches show along the water's edge.
Nearly two-thirds of the canvas is given to a turbulent sky of grey-blue clouds broken by a band of glowing orange and pink at the horizon, reflected faintly in the river below.
