Tramonto in Ferrara

From a high vantage point the composition surveys a dense rooftop skyline: a tall square tower dominates the center, flanked by a ribbed dome and smaller cupolas, with clustered houses and church roofs stretching toward a flat horizon. Above them a vast sky fills most of the canvas, its heavy cumulus banks catching the last warm light of sunset.

Thick, dragged strokes of lilac, grey and pale gold build the clouds into sculptural masses, while the town below is rendered in darker, more compact touches of ochre and brown. The wide sky-to-city ratio and glowing band of orange light at the horizon give the view a hushed, monumental drama.
