About this work
Dense, roiling clouds fill the upper two-thirds of the canvas, lit from behind in warm gold, orange and rust streaked with cooler mauve shadow; a thin dark line marks a distant shoreline, and below it a wide band of water fills the foreground, its surface broken into patches of green, gold and copper that echo the sky.
Thick impasto and visible directional brushstrokes build the cloud mass, the warm palette set against cooler purple-grey shadow with no further landscape detail; the effect is dramatic and atmospheric, as if a storm were dissolving into light over open water.
