About this work
Rows of white-crested waves break across open sea, spreading foam over a dark, wet strip of sand and scattered rocks in the foreground. No figures or boats appear; the low horizon leaves most of the canvas to a sky filled with heavy grey clouds.
Cool blue-greens and browns dominate, with thick white impasto marking the crests of the surf. Loose, energetic brushstrokes capture the movement of water and clouds, giving the scene a restless, atmospheric feel of an overcast day of rough surf.
