About this work
Seen from a raised vantage point, a river curls through a broad valley, its pale water reflecting the sky between banks lined with autumn-colored forest. Tall dry grasses and shrubs fill the foreground, with a low wooden fence rail crossing the bottom of the composition and small buildings faint on the far bank.
Slate-grey and white clouds are painted in sweeping, wind-swept strokes that dominate the upper half, set against the deep greens and golden oranges of the tree-covered hills below. Loose, confident brushwork throughout gives the scene an energetic, weather-driven mood despite the calm of the water.
