About this work
A cluster of small buildings with pitched roofs sits on a rocky outcrop above a winding river gorge, wedged between steep green mountainsides. Behind the village the slopes rise into a dark, shadowed ridge, and beyond that a snow-capped peak closes the valley at the top of the canvas.
Broad, thick strokes of green and ochre model the sunlit near slopes, while the middle-distance mountainside is painted in deep blue-black shadow that throws the sunlit village and snowy summit into sharp relief. The strong contrast between shadowed and lit ground gives the whole valley a dramatic, sunlit clarity.
