About this work
A large-eyed owl stands on a skull resting on a closed book inscribed EX-LIBRIS. To either side, a nude man plucking a stringed instrument and a nude woman stand within the pans of an overhead balance scale, its beam crossing the top of the composition; ribboned banners below carry lettered inscriptions.
Fine stippled and hatched lines render the owl's feathers, the skull's hollow sockets, and the scale's metalwork with meticulous precision against solid black backgrounds. The symmetrical, emblem-like arrangement and vanitas imagery of skull, book, and scale produce a solemn, contemplative bookplate design.
