About this work
Three bearded men wear elaborate patterned crowns and turbans and heavily decorated robes, each holding his hands pressed together in a gesture of prayer or adoration. Their figures crowd close together above a woven basket or manger edge at the base of the image, with a small fragment of ornamental sky set apart above.
Dense stippled engraving covers every robe, crown and beard with intricate ornamental patterning, rendered in warm sepia against a deep indigo, star-flecked background. The richly decorated surfaces and solemn, folded hands give the print a hushed, reverent gravity.
