About this work
A young man with tousled reddish-brown hair and bare shoulders is shown frontally in a small central medallion, his brow furrowed and gaze direct. Around him, concentric rings of bold interlocking color bands, a striped teal-and-white spiral followed by an outer swirl of blue, gold, green, red and orange, expand to the rim of the plate.
The portrait itself is modeled with warm terracotta hatching that gives the face volume and a serious, searching expression, while the surrounding bands are painted in flat, high-saturation strokes with visible brush texture.
