About this work
Three robed figures, two wearing tall pointed crowns and one crowned with a laurel-like band, stand close together in profile; the foremost cradles a slender patterned pitcher in his hands. Small oxen occupy a rough enclosure behind them, and a separate torn fragment showing a radiating, star-like burst is mounted above the main scene.
Every robe, crown and vessel is covered edge to edge in intricate incised ornament, dense cross-hatching and swirling motifs that read almost as embroidered textile. Worked entirely in black and white with strong tonal contrast, the print gives the figures a hieratic, sculptural solemnity and a hushed, ceremonial mood.
