About this work
Framed by a gold Gothic arch on a red ground, the panels read like stained glass: robed figures harvest grapes at top, armored knights clash below, and in the foreground a rose-crowned, winged young woman in profile holds a wine-filled chalice. A dove flies above, a lion's head appears at lower right, and small walled towers anchor the lower corners.
Thin scratched lines of thorns and roses overlay the flat, icon-like scenes, gold tracery separating cadmium red from muted blue, green and ochre figures. The decorative, stained-glass handling creates a solemn, mysterious, symbolic mood of sacrifice and devotion.
