About this work
Two women in medieval-style dress and headdresses stand at opposite corners, each holding a small bird, surrounded by roses and thin straw-like strands. Between them rises a gothic arch divided into small panels, each holding a miniature scene — a Madonna and child, peasants at work, farm animals, and a distant tower and mountains — like stained glass, while a flock of swallows crosses a golden triangular field below the arch.
Deep ultramarine blue anchors the border, set against warm ochre straw-textures, jewel-toned reds, greens and blues in the panel scenes, and pale, delicately painted faces.
