About this work
Three richly costumed women are grouped behind a screen of roses, lilies and iris. At left one plucks a mandolin; at center, in a feathered white headdress, one lifts a finger to her lips in a hushing gesture; at right, in a red cap, one plays a wind instrument. Their voluminous, pattern-covered skirts fill the lower canvas, opening behind them onto a harbor with sailing ships.
The palette is saturated and jewel-toned, turquoise, coral and gold set against cooler sea blues. Costumes and flowers carry fine decorative detail, while faces are softly modeled in warm tones. The dense pattern, symmetrical grouping and hushing gesture give the scene a staged, storybook air of secrecy.
