About this work
A longship with a diamond-patterned sail and a carved dragon prow carries a row of helmeted warriors behind painted shields, while a figure at the bow blows a horn. Beneath the hull, a churning band of struggling nude figures and a horned sea-monster thrash amid waves, framed by a knotwork border and a runic banner along the bottom edge.
Fine engraved lines build crisp pattern across sail, shields, and armor, contrasting with the looser, agitated marks of the drowning figures below.
