About this work
On the left a fair-haired woman with a golden halo and pale blue drapery pulls back her bow, a small hound crouched at her feet; at center a broad-shouldered nude man with the antlered head of a stag raises both arms as two hounds spring up to seize his legs. Dense rounded green trees, a pale clouded sky, and a narrow blue stream along the bottom edge complete the setting.
Painted in the fine, dense hatching typical of maiolica ware, the palette sets earthy ochre and red flesh tones against saturated blue and layered green; the linear, engraving-like brushwork and stylized, Renaissance-derived figures give the scene a decorative clarity, charging the hunter's transformation with quiet menace.
