About this work
Two white marble statues on stone pedestals stand at either side of a park path thickly carpeted in fallen golden leaves. Tall trees with yellow and green foliage rise on both sides, their canopy nearly closing over the avenue, while small figures, including what appears to be an adult and child, walk along the path in the distance. A low clipped hedge and more trees close the background.
The scene is dominated by warm golds, ochres and olive greens in the leaves and canopy, set against the cool white of the statues and patches of pale sky above. Foliage is built up with short, dabbed strokes that let light flicker through the branches, while the ground is worked in broad sweeps of yellow and brown. The overall effect is warm and quietly reflective, an autumn walk through a formal garden.
