About this work
A wide, shallow river or quarry channel flows between dark rocks in the foreground, its pale surface streaked with reflections of the trees along the far bank. Autumn foliage in orange, yellow and rust rises behind the water, thinning toward a flat, hazy sky at the top of the canvas. No figures appear; the composition is built entirely from water, stone and trees.
Paint is applied thickly with a palette knife, especially in the rippled water and pale rocks, giving the surface a rough, sculptural texture. Muted greys and creams in the water contrast with the warmer golds and browns of the autumn trees, while darker rocks anchor the lower half of the picture. The effect is quiet and contemplative, a still corner of an autumn woodland stream.
