About this work

A heavily textured ochre-brown rock wall fills the left side of the composition, its striations carved in thick paint. A pale dirt road runs along its base and curves away into the distance, where low mountain peaks stand silhouetted against the sky; a stretch of green field opens on the right.

Warm rust and brown tones model the rock's rough surface in thick impasto strokes, while cooler blue-grey mountains and the pale road recede in flatter, smoother paint. Bright, even daylight and the empty path give the scene a quiet, contemplative stillness.
