About this work
A high vantage point overlooks a winding river valley in winter, its dark, partly frozen water curving between snow-covered banks lined with bare and rust-colored shrubs. Small village houses with pitched roofs and a scattering of leafless trees dot the far slope, while in the foreground a bundled figure in blue, wearing a white hat, stands beside a tripod on the snowy hillside.
Oil is applied in confident, textured strokes, with warm ochre and rust tones in the foreground brush set against the cool whites and pale blues of the distant snow and sky. Broad handling of the snowfields and looser, calligraphic strokes for the branches convey a crisp winter light and a tranquil, contemplative mood.
