About this work

A low arched bridge spans a broad river, its pale balustrade and supporting piers visible beneath a stand of tall trees whose branches are mostly still bare, just beginning to show a few small green and yellow leaves. The rocky riverbank in the foreground slopes down to calm water stretching toward a distant, hazy shoreline.

Cool blues and greys dominate the water and sky, set against warm browns of bark and earth in the foreground, suggesting early spring light. The paint is applied in loose, vigorous strokes, the tangle of branches built up in dark, wiry lines against a pale, cloud-streaked sky, for a quiet, austere calm.
