About this work
The composition is seen through a portico, with a pale marble atlas figure and a bronze-toned twin atlas figure bearing the entablature on either side of the frame. Between them, a snow-covered street recedes toward a green and cream domed building, small pedestrian figures crossing the snow, and the golden dome of a distant cathedral rising on the horizon.
Cool greys, muted greens and white snow dominate the palette, warmed by the golden dome glimpsed in the distance. Soft, hazy winter light and loosely handled brushwork blur the far buildings, while the sculpted atlantes are modeled with firmer strokes, creating a contemplative, quietly monumental view.
