About this work
The back walls of a row of aged buildings face the viewer, their brick and plaster patched and weathered, with small windows and a leaning wooden lean-to among them. Bare trees stand at either side, and in the gap between roofs a golden onion dome catches the light. The foreground is a muddy yard of thawing snow, puddles, and scattered boards and debris.
Warm ochre and rose tones on the sunlit walls play against a pale blue sky and the cool gray-blue of melting snow. The paint is applied in quick, textured touches that keep the architecture loose, with the canvas weave visible throughout. The scene reads as an unglamorous, everyday back-street corner caught in bright winter light.
