About this work
The canvas is filled edge to edge with a thicket of tall dried stalks, curling seed heads, and wispy plumes, seen so close that individual plants merge into an overall woven texture. Only a narrow band of pale, cloud-streaked sky at the top gives a sense of horizon and scale.
Warm ochres, rust, and cream are interlaced with cool teal and green, laid on in thick, looping knife strokes that trace the curl of each stem. The dense, all-over texture and muted, sunless light produce a hushed, closely observed study of a meadow's late-year decay.
